Glossary
Aligning Edge:
Aligning edge is the bottom edge of the check when the face of the cartridge is viewed.
ANSI:
ANSI is the abbreviation of American National Standards Institute.
Auxiliary on-Us Field:
Auxiliary On-Us Field is an optional field which is present to the left of Routing field. These are widely used for the commercial checks for serial number which are consecutive. The data printed in this field must be followed by the On-Us Symbols.
Batch Header:
The Batch header is a Process Control Document which is numbered serially that precedes the set of items that are to be entered for processing purpose.
Character-to-Character Spacing:
The Character to Character spacing is the distance between the adjacent characters. The spacing is measured between the right edges of one character to the right edge of the other.
Driver:
A driver is a computer program which is designed by the printer manufacturer. The driver helps the PC to recognize the printer connected to it via the parallel port or the USB port.
Debossment:
The impression caused by the print on the paper document by an impact printing. This is generally caused as a result of the excessive pressure applied to imprint a character.
Duty Cycle:
The duty cycle is the terminology which is used to refer to the number of copies that the printer or copier can print on a monthly basis.
Extraneous Ink:
Extraneous ink is the magnetic ink which is located within the clear band and other than MICR characters which is printed. Proper care should be taken that no part of text, lines or images are printed within the clear band.
Fax Machine:
Short form for Facsmile used to transfer copies of document using telephone network.
Fuser Roller:
These are used in laser printers so that it heats the paper and melts the toner making it to stick to the paper giving it a permanent bond.
Glossy Paper:
This kind of paper is widely used for the printing of visiting cards. They are called as glossy paper because their surface is smooth and shiny.
Grain:
The grain is the direction of the fiber in the paper sheet. Generally these fibre runs in parallel to the dimension of the cut sheet which is longer.
Ink:
A liquid that contains various pigments or dye base which is stored in cartridge to print characters on the paper.
Laser printer:
A laser printer is the one which produces high quality printing of text and images on the plain paper. These laser printers use toner cartridges to produce high quality printing.
Landscape:
The printing can be done in two way, they are, Portrait and Landscape. Landscape option will print the page across the length of the paper
Macro:
The macro is the control codes and other escape sequences whose executions are initiated by a single printing command.
MICR:
MICR is the abbreviation of for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. Generally it consists of magnetic ink characters which are recognized by the magnetic or optical equipment which has the capacity of recognition.
Orientation:
The orientation refers to the direction in which the characters are printed on the paper. The orientation can be portrait or landscape.
Paper Dust:
These are the residues of the paper fibers particles formed on top of the paper. The paper dust is actually a threat to the printer because it may get stuck up in the printer leading to printer jamming.
Print Density:
This is the relative darkness of the print being done on the paper which has the effect on the amount of magnetic ink. The print density can be varied mechanically or by the menu selection in the printer driver.
Printer Ribbon:
A printer ribbon is a strip of cloth which is used in dot matrix printers. These ribbons are dipped in composite black colored dye and the printed characters and images are not of good quality.
Safety Paper:
A safety paper has a warning indicator hidden in it which indicates any fraudulent alteration. These are highly calendered bonded sheets of paper.
Serial Number:
Every toner cartridge has a serial number. This serial number helps in the proper identification of a particular toner cartridge and replaces it in case of any manufacturing defect by the company. The serial number also proves the genuine of toner cartridge.
Toner:
Toner is a dry powdery substance which is widely used in toner cartridges and in turn used in laser printers, photocopiers and other fax machines. These are simply carbon powders which are now mixed with a type of polymer to produce good quality printing.
